Corticolous; on deciduous eutrophicated trees; very common.

Variable in colour (grey - green - brown - black); thallus adpressed (Physcia tenella more raised), +- orbicular; upper surface with laminal and marginal soralia.
Medulla K- (Ph. ten.: medulla K+ yellow).
